HISTORY: Founded in 1893, the Thalian Blackfriars are the second-oldest collegiate dramatic club in the United States. Founded by UGA students as the Thalian Dramatic Club in 1893, the Thalians merged with rival club The Blackfriars (founded in 1926) to become the
Thalian-Blackfriars in 1931 and the official theatre club for University of Georgia. The popularity of University Theatre led to a call for academic courses in theatre by 1936 and the formation of the Department of Dramatic Art in 1939 — today's Department of Theatre and Film Studies. The Thalian-Blackfriars has continued to produce student performances ever since.
