UGA Theatre Announces 2022-2023 Season
Questions of identity loom large over UGA Theatre’s 2022-2023 season, whether in the farcical tale of a set of twins being mistaken for their long-lost siblings or in the story of a young drag queen’s attempt to find himself in 1970s New York. Through comedic, dramatic, and musical narratives, this season offers a series of plays that showcase the search for identity – how we define ourselves in relation to our partners, our families, our jobs, and the world surrounding us - however chaotic it may be.
“When we were putting together this season, I was struck by how each of the plays address both the creation and destruction of identity,” says head of performance George Contini. “We see characters affirming sexual identity, having their identities mistaken, forging group identities, have their racial identity disrespected, and characters locked in oppressive gender tropes that diminish their ability to thrive authentically.”
Newly-appointed Department Head Julie Ray
The theme of identity is also reflected in the department itself with the appointment of new department head Julie Ray, a veteran theatre and film practitioner.
“It’s an exciting opportunity to establish the tone of my upcoming tenure,” says Ray. “So the theme of identity seems particularly appropriate as we all collaborate to create a new departmental voice going forward.”
